Summertime at the Fenners

Well, I've been spending as much time outside as possible this summer. I just can't get enough of the warm, beautiful weather. Every once in a while thoughts of rain and cold creep into my head and I quickly toss them aside. I must enjoy the summer fully!
We have a little private oasis in our backyard. Nothing fancy but oh so charming and serene Even when the neighbors are enjoying their own yard with music, beer, and conversation it's just a background of community sounds, which I also enjoy.
Summer reading has been a mix of mystery, cooking/life (Molly Wizenberg), a delightful chinese novel, Penelope Lively, David Lodge, Marsha Mehran and others. It's been a treat to read often and for hours; one of the delights of retirement!
Our daughter, Thess, moved in and has brought all of her energy and creativity! She's gotten me out for daily morning walks up to the Capitol and around the lake (we walk for about 1hr. and 15 min.-probably a little over 2 miles). Thank you Thess. Just like when I'm driving, I tend to look all around at the sights. We've seen ducks, geese, otters, a Kingfisher, women with babies, women with sisters, women with friends, women with men, women alone and men alone, blackberries, snowberries, rosehips, thistles - it's wonderful.
I've started learning to use my new sewing machine. Used the applique stitch the other day, pretty neat I'd say. I'm going to like this!
Also going to work on some paper crafts. What are paper crafts you say? Paper mache', making gift boxes, book arts, paper mobiles, puppets, miniature houses, collages, etc. I picked up a couple of books at Daniel Smith in Seattle last week and it looks like fun. I like paper because it doesn't require any machinery and I can do it just sitting at my table!
